Studying the Bible - Part I - Memorizing Scriptures

Memorizing Scriptures

Whether new or old to the Word of God, diving into the Bible head first can be just as intimidating as diving into a school of sharks! Let’s take a look at a few tips to get you started on your journey of awaking.

It’s amazing when we hear people quote passages from the Bible. Many times we don’t think it’s possible to get to that point. Knowing where scriptures are located, what is said, and who wrote it is vital to the foundation of studying the Bible. Of course this not an over night process. Just as toddlers begin to build their vocabulary word by word, sentence by sentence, you’ll be able to build your biblical knowledge one scripture at a time. Remember that knowing the Word of God allows us to be able to witness to other people, fight in spiritual warfare, call on healing, prayer, and many other reasons.

First - Memorize the Location in the Bible

The reason for memorizing the location of the scripture you are trying to memorize is so that if you forget the scripture, you will know exactly where to find it. Lets use Proverbs 16:3 for an example. Repeatedly say "Proverbs 16:3" again and again. Emphasize a different syllable each time you say until it flows naturally.

Second - Begin to Memorize the Verse

Repeat each part of the of the scripture emphasizing on different words each time as you did above. "Commit your works to the Lord, And your thoughts will be established." "Commit your works to the Lord, And your thoughts will be established". "Commit your works to the Lord, And your thoughts will be established." By emphasizing different words, this will help you not to leave out any during your memorization process.

Third - Combine the Two

Combining the first two steps, say aloud the location and scripture, "Proverbs 16:3, "Commit your works to the Lord, And let your thoughts be established," at least ten times at a time. Then repeat the verse and ask yourself where is it located and repeat the location. You'll have the verse and location memorized in no time. When you're asked about where in the Bible does it speak about establishing your thoughts, you'll be able to have an instant reply. You won't know until you try it!

Be Blessed and Empowered by the Word of God!
